What Defines Cozy Fantasy? This Popular Genre Is Having (More Than) a Moment

Curated insights to help fiction writers improve their craft

I've been more stressed than usual lately... have you felt it, too? This year started in a flurry of activity and it hasn't let up.

Among the multitude of reasons to read and write books, escapism remains a valid one. But I'd argue it's more than that.

As a writer, you have the power to create alternate realities and propose new norms to your readers. You offer an escape and extend an invitation to envision something new.

When life feels overwhelming, it's a relief to escape into another world. You’re not alone in this desire. And this feeling has given rise to a new subgenre in the past few years: Cozy fantasy.

The coziest of fantasies

As an editor, I've seen a recent influx of clients writing cozy fantasy or fantasy with cozy elements. And a new report from K-lytics (more on that in my most recent blog) charts rising interest among readers.

Cozy fantasy is a growing subgenre of fantasy that offers engaging stories of warmth and hope without high stakes or the stress of daily life. Sounds lovely, right?

I share more about what defines cozy fantasy in the blog this month. Give it a read and see if it's something you'd like to incorporate in your writing!

Curated insights to help fiction writers improve their craft My editor brain is full to the brim of ideas. Is this how you feel as a writer sometimes? So many ideas, so little time to bring them into the world! The catalyst for my ideation proliferation is the recent ACES editor’s conference in Salt Lake City. If you’ve ever thought work conferences were boring or stuffy, think again. My Uber driver defaulted to commiseration when I told him why I was in town: “Ah, work conferences suck.” But...

A graphic with fuzzy slippers says: Make writing or editing feel cozy.

Curated insights to help fiction writers improve their craft I don’t know about you, but I love my comfort zone. Especially as we slip into autumn here in the Midwest, I want to get cozy. A crisp quilt tucked into my lap. A warm mug of chai in hand. A few extra pillows atop my already overstuffed reading chair.
